But because SEO is not immediately understood by many CEOs, the tendency is to not look at all its elements at once.

I have had people ask me to find them a “content person” for their SEO efforts. This is the same as asking someone for a “copy person” to write their ads.

The creative process in advertising is more easily understood because everything is right there to see. There’s an artwork or an audio or visual thing to look at and listen to.

CEOs would do well to get savvy about the creative process in SEO because this is quickly becoming the principal brand-driver that money cannot buy.

These things have changed recently:

  • Online advertising is becoming as expensive as traditional advertising
  • Social media is no longer free and is costly
  • Traditional media… meh

Just in the last six months (this is written in August 2016) I have seen the importance of SEO rise in an almost vertical climb. Because SEO is not new – and because there is no evidence that Google will stop indexing sites – SEO should be treated as the “new traditional”.
